Introducing Mindfulness into the School Curriculum
Hilden Oaks believe that children’s well-being is paramount to their successful education. For the past few years they have been offering an after-school Mindfulness Club which has helped those attending to:
♥ Improve focus
♥ Become more resilient in their day-to-day lives
♥ Gain a deeper understanding of their emotions
♥ Be more positive thinkers; promoting kindness and
♥ Gratitude
♥ Develop a sense of calm
♥ Achieve a healthier mental well-being
This is what some of children who attend the club say about mindfulness:
It makes me feel relaxed, calm and peaceful before I do my studies. (Kimran Year 6)
It relaxes your mind so that you can concentrate better and you sleep really well that night. (Sophia Year 3)
I find mindfulness helps me to clear my mind when I have so many thoughts in my head and it’s really busy. It helps me to deal with one thought at a time. (Zak Year 4)
In September 2018 Hilden Oaks, introduced mindfulness as part of the curriculum for the whole school. Pupils complete a six-week mindfulness course during the academic year. The course is based on recommendations from the Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP), run by a trained mindfulness teacher, and which relates directly to the values the school aspires to, as part of their Values-based Education. For those children who wish to extend their mindfulness practise, the optional after-school club will continue.
“Mindfulness changes lives. It sustains the children’s natural curiosity and helps them engage more deeply with others” (Michael Chaskalson – Leading Mindfulness Expert)
